Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford began performing in her teen years and joined a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime she was already making her TV debut on the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate would also frequently work as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her set in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
